Chancellor's introduction

Gentlebeings, Academicians,

Usually here would be placed a short summary of the Academy activities. Usually I try my best to point out what new and good things we have done by putting together our diversities. Usually I would end with an ear-pulling to myself and to all of us so that we will remember that we can always do better. Usually.

This time, however, I want to remind all about a sensitive subject, which concerns all of us: we are different from each others.

Lately, many things are happening in the S. T. I. C. and many things are changed during the ten years I spent in THE club. It is not up to me, here, to debate about who is right and who is wrong, and about what is good and what is bad for the club future.

All I can say is that we are many and we are all different. This is a great thing, but also a difficult one, since not all the people can be contented. The S. T. I. C., as recall it, used to be a big family; today it can be, at its best, a condominium with many big families living in it. With a bit of regret for the past, I can do nothing but to offer my humble contribution so that a new beauty will be born to so many diversities.

Everybody is needed in a society economy1 and as long as everybody will be given space to express oneself, even though we have to conquer it through some bold acts, I will be satisfied with my contribution.

I hope that the honey and the rhetoric in my introduction will not make you too sick. After what we testified, I felt the urge to express once again why I feel myself as a Vulcan.

I am pleased to see that we have differences. May we together become greater than the sum of both of us2.

Andrea 'Shand' Cozzolino

Academy Chancellor

Vulcan Academy at SticCon XIII

Last October, from the 21th to 24th, 1999 SticCon XIII took place in Bellaria. During the Con, as every year, the Races Senatus held its meeting. The Vulcan Academy was represented by Vice-Chancellor Marco "Sabich" Vittorini and Senator Anna "T'Sun" Perotti. Senator Silvana "T'Var" Varlec also attended in her quality of Vice-Moderator. During the meeting we presented the articles to be published next year. We will give a list of them further.

Moderator Kronogh ghar Krmongh Ai Kranegh, aka Antonio Falcolini, informed us about his decision to postpone the publishing of the Races Fanzine, because the material collection is not completed yet. However, he gave us his Klingon word of honor that the fanzine will be printed.

An other novelty, which came out from the meeting is that, from now, the Races Senatus will accept our contributions whenever they will be ready. That is, we no longer have to deliver our articles to be published on the IST all at once, on occasion of the annual meeting, but we will be allowed to deliver them at any time. That allows us more pliability and better timing and put us in mild advantage, since presently the R. S. has ten our articles still to be published. That does not mean we can forget about writing other ones. On the contrary, to be allowed to deliver our pieces as they become ready will allow us to substitute whenever we like an already delivered article with a more interesting or better timed one.

Antonio Falcolini was confirmed as R. S. Moderator, along with his whole staff. After that, on 11/11/99 a new S. T. I. C. Commanding Staff was appointed. The newly appointed elective members are Marco Pesaresi, Alessandra Rossato and Nicola Vianello. Understandably despised, Ambassador Kronogh considered to resign his charge of R. S., but, comforted by the warm support of all delegates, he finally decided to boldly remain in his place.

After R. S. meeting, a Vulcan Academy meeting followed. All Vulcans in the Con we were able to reach attended. Unfortunately the meeting was called on the spot, with very short notice, and we are quite sure that, notwithstanding our efforts to find everybody, we missed some. We regret about that and we would recommend to all of you that, in the future, you will want to help us by contacting our delegates as soon as you arrive to the Con place.

The meeting was quite satisfactory both because of the presence of so many and because of the interest and good will expressed by the attending ones. Many offered their ideas to improve our fanzines and promised their contribution. We obviously expect they to keep their promises. Any other course of action would be most illogical.

Later, Consul Silvana "T'Var" Varlec e Researchers Salvatore "Sooran" Carboni and Giuseppe "Saduk" Ruiu stated their availability to act as Vulcan Culture teachers at the Roman Department of Star Fleet Academy.

Works in progress

Vulcan Anthology, 2000

Trustee: Vice-Chancellor Marco ‘Sabich’ Vittorini

Synopsis: Yearly S.T.I.C. fanzine edited by the Vulcan Academy and sold for charity. It includes stories about Vulcan and Vulcans, articles, arts, poetry.

Status: Selecting materials.

Dead line: the end of July ’2000, to be presented at STICCon 2000.

So far we selected the followings:

"Il custode del katra" (The Keeper of the Katra) a novel by the well known American writer Chris Dickenson

"Incontri intergalattici" (Intergalactic Encounter) and "Costume da bagno?" (Swimsuit?) two delightful short stories by Arachnethe

"Comunione di menti" and "Domani sarà diverso" poetry by Giulia "Erin" Pellegrini

We are also considering to include a different kind of materials in this issue.

Specifically we are waiting for the writings promised by some researchers who we met at the Con. Some of them might prove good for our needs.

It is interesting to look at some of our Vulcan (and not Vulcan) readers' reaction to T'Var's "Against Unification" which appeared in IST 83. Even before it was printed, the article already had gotten an answer by Researcher Salkar; that will be printed quite soon. Other answers are coming, and many of them decidedly deserve attention. Since we cannot monopolize the IST with what is becoming an internal debate, the most logical solution might just be to continue it in our fanzine.

Other projects

Vulcanmecum

Trustee: To be appointed

It has been suggested to collect all available canon information about Vulcan species and to organize them in a booklet to be given to our members, especially the youngest ones. The proposal seems a good one and it would deserve to be done. Nevertheless, so far, none of our researcher seems to have found time to work on it. Anybody is willing to improve his/her academic curriculum by taking charge of the project?

Linguistic Commission

Trustee: Senator Silvana "T'Var" Varlec

The Chief of Linguistic Commission thanks all the people who answered her questionnaire, attached to the previous issue of this newsletter. Shortly, they will receive by the Commission a newsletter about the work in progress status. She also points out that she was pleased by the great number of answers and that almost all of them showed some interest to collaborate in her project.
