Chancellor's introduction

Gentlebeings, Academicians,

It has been a long time since the last Academy newsletter. There is little new to report. Which is not good. Many little and not so little clues forced me to notice that on this last year the Academy, as well as the STIC itself, is having a weak time.

But I am not very much worried about it. Over all the years spent together I witnessed many of such times and I also saw Academicians work miracles to keep ours works quality high as usual.

Every time the Academy came out of similar pauses to "think" strengthened. Every time old and new Academicians came forward to bring new life to our team. What are you waiting for, then? Come on!

Good work, Andrea 'Shand' Cozzolino

Consulates

When the Academy was founded, its member were few and spread all over the country and communications were entirely entrusted to phone, a swift but expensive mean, and snail mail, which deficiencies do not need to be told. We thought then to appoint somebody who could act as a contact and a reference for the Vulcans who were living too far. So, Center Italy and North Italy Consulates were born. Since then, they both did their job in a dignified way. Now, with communications made easier and swifter by Internet and a greater number of Academicians equally distributed all over the country, Consulates seem to be less needed. Hence, we think it logical to free the appointed Consuls from their burden and turn their energies to different duties

Therefore we thank Carlo "Skor" Mascellani and Silvana "T'Var" Varlec for all their work, knowing that they will not fail to provide assistance to whoever will still turn to them, seeking for help and advice. Obviously T'Var will remain in charge of the Linguistical Commission; Skor is available for a new task. We are waiting to know his preferences.

Races Senatus

After a long and surely hard thinking, Ambassador Kronogh ghar Krmongh Ai Kranegh, aka Antonio Falcolini, finally decided to ultimately resign from Senatus Moderator. So far, no successor has been appointed and, actually, nobody presented him/herself as a candidate. Some good willing delegates are anyway trying to complete the work for the Race Senatus Log # 2, for which some material has been gathered.

Works in progress

Vulcan Anthology, 2000

Trustee: Vice-Chancellor Marco 'Sabich' Vittorini

Synopsis: Yearly S.T.I.C. fanzine edited by the Vulcan Academy and sold for charity. It includes stories about Vulcan and Vulcans, articles, arts, poetry.

Status: In progress.

Deadline: end of July 2000, to be presented at STICCon 2000.

So far we selected the followings:

"The Keeper of the Katra". A novelette by the American writer Chris Dickenson, taking place after Star Trek V- The Last Frontier. While telling Spock's ordeal, as the keeper of his brother's katra, who has to face the most conservative part of Vulcan Powers, it tries to fill the gaps in the official chronology and to find a logical explanation to some "seeming" contradictions in it.

"Intergalactic Encounters" and "Swimsuit?" by Arachne The Two. Two delightful little tales about the early relationship between a young lady teaching English at the Vulcan Embassy on Earth and a stern Ambassador.

"Once in the Night" also by Arachne The Two. Settled a few years after the previous two. The Moiras, the goddesses from Terran mythology who determine Humans' fates, gather, perplexed, around the cradle of the unusual result of a certain intergalactic encounter.

"Comunione di menti" e "Domani sarà diverso" poems by Giulia "Erin" Pellegrini

"Vulcanism and Stoicism" an essay by T'Prann. This contribution by one of ours overseas Academicians is a kind of an experiment, already announced in the previous newsletter, to enlarge our most important fanzine field. Although it will still give precedence to fiction and poetry, we find it logical to give also room to those who prefer, or at least enjoy, to write or read essays. T'Prann's article seemed to us the most logical choice, since it is a good one and about a subject, which we can imagine to be a recurring one in Vulcan parlors. It handles the issue with elegance and without pedantry. If its author were a STIC member, it would have found its natural place in RS pages on Inside ST.

R. S. articles, 2000

Trustee: Vice-Chancellor Marco 'Sabich' Vittorini

So far, the Races Senatus has at its disposal the following articles:

"Those ... embarrassing Vulcans" by Mariapia "Mir" Narducci;

"Pro Unification Between Vulcan and Romulus" by Alberto "Salkar" Piccu.

"Air Conditioning in Vulcan Architecture" by Umberto Cesaro

"Daily Meditation" by Silvana "T'Var" Varlec

"The Katra, a Materialistic Theory" by Enrico "Serik" Ciulla,

"Aiding Tools for Daily Meditation" by Marco "Sabich" Vittorini.

"About the So-called Matriarchal Bent in Vulcan Society" by Salvatore "Sooran" Carboni.

This allows us to relent the pressure on our researchers about submissions of new articles for Inside ST. Anyway do not forget that there is not just Inside ST. Besides, are you not yet tired to read always the same signatures? The owners of the signatures are beginning to get tired to write ...

Other projects

Vulcanmecum

Trustee: To be appointed

It has been suggested to collect all available canon information about Vulcan species and to organize them in a booklet to be given to our members, especially the youngest ones. The proposal seems a good one and it would deserve to be done. Nevertheless, so far, none of our researcher seems to have found time to work on it. Anybody is willing to improve his/her academic curriculum by taking charge of the project?

Internet

Trustee: Senator Anna 'T'Sun' Perotti

Feedback

Sometimes our efforts are awarded by words of appreciation from our readers; more often they are met by silence. To silence we do prefer constructive criticism like the following one. The researcher who sent it to us is one of our best contributors and an affectionate reader of everything about Vulcan and Vulcans, which can be found around, whether it is produced by STIC or by anybody else. Hence, we think her opinion, even though expressed in a colorful and emotional way, cannot be ignored.

I must say that I was a bit disappointed by La figlia delle stelle. Mind you, not by the quality of the stories or by the way they are written, but because they don't agree in the least with my personal view of the Vulcan world and the Vulcan way, and, honestly, I didn't find Spock of "La figlia delle stelle", nor T'Pring of "A Different Perspective" in character (Come on, please! T'Pring in love, that double harridan!). I don't think they are believable. I. e. it was much more believable T'Pring as depicted in Vulcan Log (I think the story title was "Il perché") or, even better, in Log 7, Adriana Comaschi's "Quel che mancava". Also "Orfeo"- it really is well written, Macedon is a very good author, but this Vulcan who gave up his ... no, no, it isn't logical, a true Vulcan wouldn't do that, it's a cruelty, besides on Vulcan they di appreciate natural gifts. Think about Salet, called "The Gifted One", in "Dwellers In The Crucible" - he was honored for his musical gift, a natural one, not acquired (or maintained) by surgery! And what about pon farr? No, no I can't accept it!

We apologize to our friend to publish this little excerpt from a letter of hers, without her permission; unluckily, we could not get in touch with her. Maybe the phone number we have is wrong or out of date. This is why we are not printing her name. Whoever may want to send us feedback must not feel encouraged to do it anonymously.

Your works

Not all your contributions find place in IST or in a Vulcan Log. Some are too long, some are too short some are too ... original! So, why do not use also this newsletter to make your work known around? Here, we are starting a new section, which we hope will meet your approval. It will propose short stories, poetry, arts or whatever our Academicians will offer us.

Emotions

by Stefano Bernardi

I am upset. I did not think I could feel such a feeling, my training should not allow me.

Maybe my discipline has a flaw. I am just seven years old, after all, but this does not change the fact.

I am upset.

It was a simple ceremony, all went as it was expected: our families committed themselves long ago. Our bonding was foreseen.

An ancient Vulcan tradition demand that marriages are arranged by families and the would be mates must, when they are seven, by linked through a mind meld.

So that, when the time come, they will meet for the koon-ut-kal-if-fee.

Everything was going as expected, everything went as expected ...

That mental touch, its warmth, the burning torrent which flowed from it and that overwhelmed me.

That young Vulcan, Spock, he gave me sensations, feelings ... emotions!

Now I know what they are, emotions.

No, it is not possible, we cannot feel emotions, we MUST not feel emotions, but ...

But I was struck by unfamiliar feelings, about which nobody did ever tell me anything. Maybe nobody knows about them.

But they are inside me, by now. The seed which has been implanted is going to root.

I will have to hide it, to inhibit it, to suppress it, if possible.

***

Stonn. I do not understand why I feel attracted by him.

I am linked to Spock, he is my bondmate.

Nevertheless something compels me toward Stonn.

Something? I cannot fool myself: the seed is sprouting. The emotions that young Spock gave me are waking up and they are escaping my control.

Stonn is unbonded, and it is natural and logical for him to look around for a mate, but he knows that I am committed.

Nevertheless he wants me. By now, I am convinced that he is perceiving the emotion I cannot help to feel, and this is unknowingly driving him to me.

The time is coming. I sense that Spock is getting back to Vulcan, I must find a solution.

The sole solution is the challenge, hoping that Stonn will survive.

***

Here is Spock.

He brought friends with him: two Humans!

Here is the solution: he will fight with his Captain.

If Spock loses, the Captain will turn me down and I will have Stonn.

If Spock wins, he will turn me down, because I chose the challenge, and even if he will not, he has to leave, anyway, and I will have his estates and Stonn will still be here qui.

Logic. Logic always prevails over emotions.

DARK ANGEL

Beneath The Darkness,

Strength, Calmness.

Reaching Out Attempting To Emotionalize,

Holding Back For Fear Of Connecting.

Beneath The Darkness, Controling All Feeling.

Control Yet Fire Burning.

Darkness Flow Within And Emanates Without.

Probing All That Surrounds.

Dark His Being, Touching All Human Emotion From Afar.

Darkness, Yet Fire Burning Within.

Consuming, Raging.

One Touch And T'khut Is Shamed.

Human Flesh Hungers,

Yet Will Not, Cannot Be Fed.

Control Within The Darkness,

Darkness Which Enfolds All Emotion,

Enfolds And Controls.

Yet Within The Darkness Waning,

Flames Slowly Rising.

Consuming Steadily From Deep Within.

Rising And Raging Within The Darkness Of His Own Katra.

Touching, Tasting , Sensing Every Emotion,

Touching, Tasting Not Enough.

The Desire Of Fire Purging.

Darkness Demanding, Needing More.

To Be One.

Fire Triumphs, Passion Holds True.

Demanding, Insistent On Being Fed.

Releasing All Emotion.

And Darkness Once Again Enfolds Like The Wings Of

A Dark Angel,

Comforting, Yet Cold.

Passion's Mastery Holds The Fire Within The Darkness,

As The Dark Angel Holds My Heart.

Conclusion

Once again we wish that our efforts will meet, if not your approval, at least your interest. Although, as Vulcans, we are used to work just for the knowledge of having accomplished our duty, we would find it illogical to go on spending time and energies on a task which is just making the ones we are working for yawn in boredom.

We would particularly like to know how many of the ones, who joined the Vulcan Academy years ago, are still interested to be part of it and to contribute somehow to its activity. If you will want to spend a few minutes to send us, either by snail mail or e-mail, a little note of confirmation to Vice-Chancellor Sabich, who maintains the membership file, he will logically appreciate it.
