Based on a true story. Kathy Morris is a music student at the Manhattan School of Music. She loves to sing and compose and she works part time as a waitress, practices with a rock group and cares for her younger brother, Patrick. Her boyfriend, Larry, is the leader of the rock group. Being quite used to momentary losses of memory and frequent headaches she finds herself in hospital after a seizure. Dr. Richard Connought informs her about a benign meningioma. The neurosurgeon also tells her that he's decided to operate on the tumor, removing it from her brain.

During the operation unforeseen complications make the removal of the brain tumor impossible. An abnormal swelling of the brain occurs and Dr. Connought, who's taping the operation for teaching purposes for his students, is facing a tough decision. He must close the skull again, but the swelling does not allow this. He has to act quickly and decides to cut some of the tissue in order to reduce the volume.

Dr. Connought has a hard time to figure out what might have happened and to tell Richard and Larry that Kathy might not survive the operation. At home his wife is heading for a longer trip to London –alone, and the students wonder whether it was right having cut the tissue. The latter he can handle because this has been the only possibility to give her a chance of life t all. He is taking home some work which keeps him busy until late nights. Conversations with Kathy begin. She does not give up hope and is even interested in Dr. Connought's personal life. He has to operate twice on her again. Once to remove the swelling and another time to remove the tumor.

His self assuring professionalism is shaken, giving him the chance to face personal topics in is life. One day he cooks a perfect dinner for his wife, decorates the table and wants to surprise her. It is obvious that he did not do this regularly before. His wife, Lily, has waited too long and she's very much aware what it had been like before that she still decides to go on the London trip to find some way of life for herself. After the tumor has been removed, Kathy recovers in spite of all predictions made. She encourages Dr. Connought not to give up his relationship with his wife and thanks him for his endurance during these six months. Kathy also encourages him to show his wife that he cares for her and that he's not prepared to give her up.  He promptly decides to go to London to spend some months with his wife. Kathy's strong will had added to letting her regain her speaking abilities – even pursue her singing career.
