The Enterprise is returning back to earth. Her First officer, Commander Spock, has died. To make her escape possible from a explosion of the Genesis projector, he repaired the warp drive in a radioactive section of the ship. Before he died he was able to repeat the words he had said to his captain before: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few (the one)." And he had confirmed his friendship: "I am and I always will be ... your friend." His coffin was sent to the planet Genesis where a project, Genesis, which creates life where nothing was before, was tested. Between the greens the coffin lies undamaged.

Kirk is wondering why he feels uneasy. "Perhaps it is because the Enterprise seems empty." He thinks for himself. "Lt. Saavik and David, my son, have left to work on the planet to explore Genesis. The death of Spock feels like an open wound." On the bridge Kirk asks Chekov to take over the science section. Knowing that it was Spock's place Chekov only goes after a moment's hesitation. TO inquire about the ship's condition Kirk asks Scotty: "How much refit time until we can take her out again?" “Eight weeks, Sir ... But we do not have eight weeks, so I'll do it for you in two." "Mr. Scott, have you always multiplied your repair estimates by a factor of four?" "Certainly, how else can I keep my reputation as a miracle worker?" "Your reputation is secure, Scotty."

A small vessel is approaching a cloaked Klingon Bird of Pray. On board is the owner of the vessel, his co-pilot and a Klingon spy who addresses the Klingon captain in his cloaked ship saying: "Commander Kruge, this is Valkris. I have purchased the Genesis data. Ready to transmit." "Well done, Valkris," the answer is heard and soon the Bird of Prey uncloaks. "You will find this very useful." Valkris says. In astonishment Kruge looks at his screen: "You have read the data? Do you know what this means?" "Yes, my Lord," she says, "Understood!" "Soon," Valkris promises to the owner of the ship, who is now asking when he'll get his payment – and the vessel is destroyed by the Bird of Prey.

Entering into space dock, the crew of the Enterprise takes a good look at the newest ship: The Excelsior. She is equipped with transwarp drive. Watching the Enterprise come in the Star Fleet personal is awed by the sight. Through the oversized window all can see the obvious damages of the battle. Filled with admiration the people stand up from their seats as the ship passes by. Inside Chekov suddenly receives a signal: There is a life form in Spock's room. Kirk hurries to get there and find the guards before the room, the door broken open. Inside he finds McCoy. He says: "Jim, help me, you left me on Genesis. Why did you do that? Help me." To his astonishment it is Bones who demands that he takes him home to climb the steps of Mount Seleya. "Remember," McCoy says in Spock's voice, "Remember," and he collapses. The admiral praises the Enterprise's crew and grants highest commendations. When asked about Genesis he says: "Consider it a quarantine planet and a forbidden subject."

To everybody's disappointment there will also be no refit of the ship. Having watched the information about Genesis, captain Kruge does not only perceive it as a danger (– if the Federation will populate more planets with the help of Genesis - they will become a minority in space), he also thinks of it as a powerful weapon. The spaceship Saavik and David are working on is monitoring Genesis. Most impressed, David discovers that all the varieties of vegetation known to earth are there together in a few hours walk. Suddenly a signal indicates a 2 meter long metal object – Spock's coffin. Astonished that the coffin has soft-landed, because the gravitational fields have been influx, they are in for an even greater surprise: There is a life form close to the place.

Toasting "To absent friends!" Kirk, Uhura, Sulu and Chekov try to figure out what will happen to them. The Enterprise won't be repaired and McCoy is given tranquilizers. Suddenly Sarek enters the room stating that he will speak to Kirk alone. He had got all the information about his son's death from Star Fleet material. "Why did you leave him on Genesis? Spock trusted you and you denied him his future." He asks when everybody has left. When Kirk obviously does not understand Sarek makes very clear that only Spock's body is dead. Sarek wonders whether he was the last one Spock has been with and Kirk agrees: he was. This makes Sarek absolute certain: Kirk must know that he should have come with him to Vulcan because Spock entrusted Kirk with his Katra, his living spirit. Kirk shares with Sarek that he would have given his life for Spock, but he is unaware of any sharing Spock is supposed to have done. Sarek asks Kirk to agree for a mindmelt and finds out that Spock's Katra is not with him. Together they watch the video showing the last events and they clearly see: Spock has given his Katra to McCoy. Sarek sees only one solution. "Both are in pain. You must bring them to Mount Seleya on Vulcan. Only there both can find peace." Kirk gives his promise: He swears to bring both to Vulcan.

On Genesis where no life form is supposed to be Saavik and David find the life forms which have shown on the monitor: Tiny microbes on the surface of the tube have multiplied and grown. In the open coffin Saavik finds Spock's burial robe. A storm begins. Suddenly they hear a cry from the hills ... After McCoy was pretty loud in a crowded community centre about needing a starship to go to Genesis and his sentences make no sense to others, he is imprisoned. With a purpose Kirk visits him. When they are alone he tells McCoy that he suffering under a Vulcan mindmelt. "The green blooded son of a bitch! That's his revenge for all the arguments he lost." McCoy quips. To make him able to come with them Kirk gives him a medicine and Sulu cares for the guards. "The Kobayashi Maru has set sail for the promised land," Kirk tells Uhura via intercom. She's cared for the Enterprise to be taken over and uses a phaser to makes the Lieutenant on duty go into a cupboard which earns her a comment from McCoy "I'm glad you're on our side!" (Scotty has done his work on the Excelsior.)

When Kirk is grateful for his friend's support and tells them that they need not go any further, all do not hesitate to come along. "Kirk, if you do this, you never sit in the captain's chair again." The commander of the pursuing Excelsior informs him. "Warp speed," is Kirk's answer – being fully aware of the consequences. The captain of the Excelsior orders transwarp speed. The effect of the order is that the ship comes to a total standstill and Scotty's message appears on the screen: "Good morning, captain," while Scotty gives Bones some small parts: "From one surgeon to the other!"

After following the trace of whatever is trying to escape from them through deserts and snow-capped mountains, Saavik and David find the source of the sounds: A young boy shivering from the cold in the snowstorm. As Saavik puts the funeral robe around him David explains: "The Genesis wave – his cells must have been regenerated!" When both try to be beamed on board with the eight to ten year old Vulcan child, whom they agree to be Captain Spock, the contact is interrupted. A Klingon vessel has destroyed the starship. Having ordered to take prisoners, Kruge shoots his officer for his disobedience. But they seem to be lucky: there are life forms on the planet – perhaps the scientists they seek. Experiencing more and more earthquakes on Genesis, the three are aware that the Klingon will be after them soon. While Saavik talks with David about the rapid decrease of the planet she find out that he has used an unstable component to quicken the process - "Otherwise it would have taken years" David says. Saavik compares his impatience to the impatience of his father. "How many lives had it cost – and what is still to come?" she asks him.

Growing up very quickly Spock has no become a young man. Saavik teaches him what she thinks he needs to know to cope with the rapid changes. As they have expected they are found by the Klingons. When Saavik tries to explain that Genesis was a failure, Kruge dose not want to believe the project he wants to use as the most powerful weapon ever created is lost. But Kruge is called back to his ship: The Enterprise has approached. The ship still weakened and no shields; Kirk orders to watch out for the uncloaking Klingon Bird of Prey and Scotty hits the vessel before it can fire it's torpedoes. But they shoot back soon and both ships are damaged heavily. Now Kruge threatens to kill the three hostages, one after the other, if Kirk does not surrender. Kirk wants to speak to the hostages and Lieutenant Saavik answers: David is with her and a Vulcan scientist of his acquaintance. He is not himself, but he lives.

David speaks into the communicator: "Genesis does not work. It went wrong. I can’t believe they'll kill us for it!" But they do. The Klingon guarding the hostages wants to kill Saavik as David jumps onto him to save her. He is killed in the fight with the Klingon. Kirk is shaken by the news. Demanding the surrender of the Enterprise, Kruge threatens to kill the others, too. Kirk gives in, he surrenders the Enterprise. When the Klingon crew is beamed on board they find the Enterprise deserted. Kruge is informed that there is only one thing speaking. "Let me hear!" Kruge orders and the Klingon holds the communicator to the "thing": "eight, seven, six, five, four ..." On Genesis the crew watch the Enterprise coming down as a giant fireball. "My God, Bones, what have I done?" Kirk wonders in disbelief. "What you always do: Turn death into a chance to live."

Sulu's tricoder shows them where the others are and the instability of the planet, too. They find them the moment Spock suffers unbearable pain while his face changes rapidly. He changes as the planet does and ages with extreme speed. Just before Spock had thrown the Klingon guard several tens of meters away with ease, - though young, obviously in possession of his Vulcan power. Now he lies unconsciously on the ground after suffering through these drastic changes in him. Kirk finds his dead son and remains a moment quietly beside him while McCoy examines Spock. Saavik tries to comfort Kirk by telling him that David gave his life to save them. When Kirk asks about Spock's condition, Bones is sure that he is aging too quickly. Spock's body condition is fine, but his mind is lacking behind. "It seems, Admiral, that I have got all his marbles."

Saavik suggests to get him off this planet because he ages here as the planet does. Kirk takes a communicator and tells Kruge he has got the secret of Genesis. "Beam us up and you get it!" is the message, but Kruge comes down, beams up the crew – without Kirk and Spock who is exhausted, lying on the ground. A fight follows and Kruge dies, falling into one of the hot openings filled with lava. In the middle of the inferno Kirk grabs a communicator from the Klingons and gives the command to be beamed up and the crew overwhelms the Klingon who is left. In the Bird of Prey they make their way towards Vulcan. Spock is unconscious. Still McCoy talks to him. He wants Spock to remember. He wants to get Spock's mind out of his head. And, when he is sure, Spock does not hear him, he admits: "It seems I have missed you. I don't know if I could stand to loose you again."

The Bird of Prey gets permission to land on Vulcan and Spock's body is brought to the place of Fal Tor Pan on mount Seleya. Sarek has requested the priestess to perform the ancient procedure. Fal Tor Pan has not been performed since ages, the priestess tells everybody. She warns McCoy about the danger involved: "Spock's body lives. With your approval we shall use all our powers to return to his body that which you possess. But, McCoy, you must now be warned: The danger to you is a grave as the danger to Spock" "I choose the danger!" The Priestess performs Fal Tor Pan. And everybody present watches without moving until the transfer is done the next day. Spock leaves with the procession – but stops, slowly turns and comes back to the people he has passed. Slowly he remembers the friendship with Kirk, the words they have exchanged, his first name, the faces of the others ... The memory seems to come back more and more. Soon he even raises his eyebrow towards Kirk like in the times they used to work together. In the middle of his colleagues he looks back to Kirk ... and the adventures goes on.
