Arizona, April 27th, 1880: The story is told by the editor of the Tombstone Epitaph. An Indian is pursued into town. The sheriff can just prevent the pursuer from shooting him. Knowing Little Hawk, the sheriff asks the pursuer why he is after Mc Gillan's most trusted Indian. Little Hawk is accused of having stolen horses. The town people suggest to hang him, because they have two witnesses: One of them is the Padre of the mission where Little Hawk himself is from. When he hears the witnesses and who they are, Sheriff Hollister is prepared to believe them. So he arrests Little Hawk – because he is under suspicion and to protect him.

The sheriff listens to Little Hawk, who tries to convince him of his innocence: He only wanted to lead the horses to better pastures. By now the pursuer is questioned by his boss: Why didn't he kill the Indian- he had been ordered to cause Indian trouble in the area. He tried, but Little Hawk was too quick. And he tells his boss that the Padre has seen Little Hawk steal the mission ponies, while Little Hawk was thinking he took a nap. Now they plan a lynch mob to cause trouble with the Indians. When the editor sees the mob coming, he quickly warns the sheriff. Sheriff Hollister knows that they do not have much of a chance against all and takes Little Hawk to the mission through the back door, riding with two other cowboys and asks the editor: "Do you think you can hold them up until we are gone?" "Well, I think so, they are not mad at me ... yet." He answers.

At the mission Little Hawk asks for sanctuary, saying he wanted to take the horses to better pastures. The Padre wonders why he left via the mountains, then and tries to explain to him that he does not need sanctuary from friends like the sheriff and to the sheriff that it is an honour for an Indian to take horses. Making clear that a Mission Indian knows the laws, the sheriff informs them that Little Haw has to be taken before a court. They lock Little Hawk up in a room where the grain is stored. Little Hawk thanks Hollister saying he won't forget what he has done for him. As the sheriff leaves, Little Hawk is brought some food and wants to talk to the Padre trying to persuade him to testify that he only wanted the best for the horses.

The Padre tells him that this is for the judge to decide. "No judge and no rope!" Little Hawk shouts and takes the knife from the food for taking the padre hostage. Then he locks the other cowboy inside the storing room. As the second cowboy comes in, Little Hawk shoots him. Now the padre intervenes and is knocked down by Little Hawk. The cowboy can free himself and goes after the sheriff, who then pursues Little Hawk. Little Hawk is waiting in the mountains for his pursuer and is shot in the arm after he tried to shoot the sheriff. Back in town, the cowboy who was hired to cause trouble, goes for a lynching again. He challenges the sheriff for a shootout. Hollister defends Little Hawk wanting to bring him in front of a court. The cowboy too is shot in the arm and arrested. Now he blames his boss for having made use of him to bring trouble to the area so that he can sell more Indian land to the railway people. Both are taken into custody as is Little Hawk.
