Lincoln
County, New Mexico.
Johnny Swift is doing a successful
job as deputy sheriff. Pat Garrett,
the sheriff, tells him when he comes to take over patrol for the night.
Walking a while side by side they detect some action in the night and
both see Billy the Kid in the dark. When they call out, Pat is shot.
Later on Johnny informs the people of the town that the express company
has been robbed of $200.
Heading a search party Johnny finds Billy at his home on the farm he is
working on.
The man sharing the room with Billy had placed $ 50 in
Billy's bed before Billy came in. Now Johnny arrests Billy for shooting
the sheriff though Billy says he's innocent. But Johnny has seen him and
searches the bed – finding the money. Seeing no way out, Billy tells him
he will get the rest of the money. Instead of the money he draws a gun
out of the box and points it at Deputy Johnny Swift. The others are forced
to drop their guns, too, and Billy escapes and visits the sleeping or
unconscious Pat to tell him that he is innocent, promising him to bring
in the real criminals.
Then Billy visits his girl friend,
Reena, to make
sure she will learn from him what has happened.
Johnny arrives there, too. The deputy admits to Reena that he likes her,
but he is aware that Reena is in love with Billy and he won't have a chance.
The deputy offers her the reward money. "Bloody money" Reena calls it.
While Johnny is searching the house, Billy has climbed the roof and
waits there until Johnny has left.
The two man behind the plot plan another robbery; one, his room mate,
dressed in clothes as Billy's are. As they hold up the coach they learn
that the men in the coach don't like it the joke: Billy has just robbed
them a mile back. Going there they are trapped by Billy.
He brings them to town and his innocence is proven with the help
of Pat, who has survived.
