The Catlin farm in Wyomig territory is run
by Sandy and Marcy Catlin, who are expecting a baby. When the father died,
the three older brothers had left the farm and Sandy, a younger, adopted son, kept the farm going. Hoping to pay off the debts with the income of the
next harvest, the couple is happily looking forward to the birth of their first child.
The other three Catlin brothers are wanted for various robberies and in need of a
hiding place and force their way into the house, find the place unexpectedly in order
and search it for money.
Sandy tries to explain that all is used to pay off the
debts for the farm. Knowing that Sandy once worked for the Overland stage
company, they want him to go on with that work so that he can tell them when a
coach is arriving which is worth to be robbed.
Rex explains to Sandy, whom the
brothers call "the runt", that they keep his wife hostage until he's willing
to cooperate and they can leave with a lot of money.
Sandy refuses; he needs all the time to work on the farm and all his efforts
for the oncoming harvest – a problem which Rex solves by looting the field.
Now Sandy has to get his old job back. As unbelievable Sandy sees their actions,
he still accepts them as his brothers and he knows that Marcy is in danger.
When Silm asks him about the burnt field and how he is doing, Sandy notices
his friend's concern and wants to be honest, but he cannot put his wife in
further jeopardy. As Slim, Jess and Daisy come for a visit, Marcy is held
hostage inside the house and Sandy goes out to ask them not to come in - lying that Marcy is not well. The brothers are on guard even watching the
place from in- and outside.
Things change when the brothers decide to rob the bank. They lock the sheriff
into a cell and Rex wants to shoot the unarmed man covering his revolver
with a blanket to silence the shot. In this moment Sandy comes in. To prevent
the cold blooded murder of his friend, Sandy attacks Rex and Slim uses the
chance to pull the key into his cell and frees himself. Two of the brothers
die in a shoot-out and Rex is put into jail. From the reward money Marcy
and Sandy can cover their debts.
