Memory Alpha is the central library facility of the UFP. Lt. Mira Romaine is on board of the Enterprise to transfer new equipment to Memory Alpha. She becomes acquainted with Mr. Scott. The crew monitors a form of energy passing Memory Alpha; it destroys all life and all computer banks as well. At the same time, the energy storm approaching the Enterprise causes Lt. Romaine to make unidentifiable sounds. Later she is able to predict what had happened on Memory Alpha while she is still on board of the Enterprise, but she does not know how to deal with the pictures she gets in her mind. When the landing party beams down, they find all erased and all dead – only Mr. Spock's tricorder finds a faint sign of life in one of the rooms: A woman, hardly alive any more.

Because the woman who was found alive on the planet made the same sounds as Lt. Romaine did when the ship had encountered the storm, Lt. Romaine is beamed down. Now the Lieutenant sees the dead people in reality exactly as she had seen them in her mind before. The woman is dead and now Lt. Romaine feels: The storm is coming back. Back on board they notice that Lt. Romaine has not been beamed up with them. The transporter beam gets her later. On the bridge Spock finds out that the energy field contains 10 different life form in pure energy.

Lt. Romaine is asked about her experience and she cannot explain it herself. Then she undergoes several checks which show a quick learning ability and a pattern Spock knows he has seen before: picture H – a picture which was taken from the energy object. The patterns match perfectly. Spock is sure that the thoughts of the field become her thoughts. The crew cannot protect the ship from being entered by the energy field. The field takes over Lt. Romaine's body and mind and reveals itself by talking through Lt. Romaine as a collective mentality of what is left from the life which has been on Zetar. The energy of the Zetars is determined to stay in her body- even if this might kill her. Only in the pressure chamber they are forced to leave the body. The Lieutenant survives the high pressure and is left on Memory Alpha to work on the restoration of what is left there.
