Beaming down to a planet Kirk, Chekov and Uhura are diverted by a powerful tractorbeam to a planet called Triskelion. Spock tries to locate the origin of the beam but the Enterprise needs time to get there. All three are kept in cells and find out that their fate is to fight as gladiators to entertain the Providers. Everyone is controlled by a device placed at their neck to inflict pain in case of disobedience.

As they arrive at Triskelion, the Enterprise is caught in the same beam, too strong to make an escape possible. Now Kirk proposes a wager. If he wins certain fights, he and his crew are free. The crew watches the fights on their screen and Kirk wins. The three Providers turn out to be bored entities of which only their brain has survived by special powers. They keep their promise,  free the planet's people and let the Enterprise and her crew go.
