Stardate 3192.1
On their way to Eminiar VII the Enterprise
picks up Ambassador Robert Fox on a diplomatic mission. When they reach the planet, they are advised not to visit, but Fox insists on being beamed down. Kirk and the
others are met by a Mea 3, a young woman. She informs them that there is war between
Eminiar VII and Vendikar, the neighboring planet, it was started more than 500
years ago.
To eliminate pain and destruction the war is fought by computers.
Her fiancee,
Anan 7, informs them that the two planets have learned to avoid the complete
devastation of war by declaring casualties by calculations. If an area is hit, the
people come in voluntarily to antimatter chambers where they are vaporized. They get
another information: The Enterprise was hit and all crew are declared casualties.
Kirk refuses to accept that and they are arrested.
When Scotty is ordered to take
down the defense shields, he refuses – not without his captain's order.
When Spock beams down and overhears a call from his captain, he easily fights the
guards and destroys the antimatter chamber.
Kirk and Spock escape and destroy the computers who have taken away the reality of war.
Facing the brutal consequence of a real war, the people of Eminiar rather engage in
peace talks – with the help of Ambassador Fox.
