The tensions between the Klingon
Empire and the Federation are high. In these times the Enterprise's mission
is to prevent the Klingons from taking over the planet Organia which is
strategically important.
Kirk and Spock beam down and try to convince the Organian Council that
they are in jeopardy to be taken over by the Klingons. The Council however
does not show much interest in the matter at all.

They keep on smiling
friendly all the time - even as the Klingons, led by Commander Kor, take
over the planet and impose their rules, which restrict the Organian's life
to an unbearable extend.
Spock and Kirk pose as merchants. Kirk, who does not manage to smile
at the Klingons as friendly as the Organians do, is the cause why Kor
remarks that he enjoys someone who hates him. Spock is questioned under
a truth detector. He has to manage to cheat the machine even when Kor
commands to increase the level of depth. Kirk suffers to see his friend
in that situation, but is relieved after Spock has passed the test and
is believed to be a merchant who is only interested in being allowed to
go on with his dealings under their occupation.
To show the Organians a way to free themselves or at least
to oppose the intruders Kirk and Spock arrange for the explosion of the
depot where the Klingons store their weapons.
They
are consigned to the Klingons by the Organians and sentenced
to death. Then the Organians free them, only to have them confronting the
Klingons again. When the moment of execution comes and both ships are about
to engage in a battle they cannot fire. All war related buttons or all weapons
became so hot they cannot touch them. And the Organians reveal who they
truly are: Omnipotent beings, pure energy balls and able to use their mental
abilities to stop any war. Kirk realized that he partly had liked the hostilities
himself and is relieved that the Organians are not as helpless as they first
seemed to be.
