Stardate 1512.2
The Enterprise is heading for uncharted regions in space and suddenly finds a buoy in front
warning them to enter this area. While the crew is carried away by the impression the buoy
makes on them and fear begins to develop, Mr. Spock finds it "fascinating" and looks upon
it with the eyes of a scientist. The buoy's movement concurrently goes along with the moves
of the Enterprise and Kirk orders to destroy the buoy. After that action a spaceship,
the Fesarius, appears in front of them.
I t seems to grow at a tremendous speed as it comes
closer and the commander, Balok, the alien commander, makes contact and informs them that they must be destroyed
because of trespassing and hostile actions. They have got ten minutes before destruction.
Kirk tries to convince him of their peaceful intentions, but fails. Tensions are high on
board because the Enterprise is trapped. Dr. McCoy confronts them: "What am I? A doctor or
a moon-shuttle conductor? If I jumped every time a light came on around here I'd end up
talking to myself!" Lt. Bailey became loud and later explains to Mr. Spock that
"Raising
my voice back there doesn't mean I was scared or I couldn't do my job. It means I happen to
have a human thing called an adrenalin gland." Spock responds: "It sounds most inconvenient
however. Have you considered having it removed?"

In a dialogue Kirk and Spock have discussed a chess game which, gave Kirk the idea
of a game of poker.
To everybody's amazement Kirk makes contact again and states that
there is a self-destructant system on board called "corbomite".
In case the ship is destroyed,
all around it will be destroyed, too, plus an extra effect: The area will be contaminated
for a long time. He succeseeds in having the time of destruction postponed.
In another dialogue Spock asks: "Has it occured to you that there is a certain inefficiency
in constantly questioning me on things you've already made up your mind about?"
Kirk: "It gives me emotional security."
They soon discover that the alien has separated from his ship – and seems to be
in distress. And it is the only person on board. Kirk heads for rescuing him ...
They find it to be a puppet, operated by a childlike entity who's aim was to test
whether the visitors, the Enterprise crew, are as peaceloving as they claimed to be.
They manage to begin a diplomatic relationship and Mr. Bailey stays on board of the
Fesarius as a volunteer.
