The Enterprise takes over a visitor: Charlie Evans, a 17 – year – old young man, coming from the cargo ship Antares. It is obvious to the crew that Captain Ramart and Tom Nellis from the Antares are in a hurry to get back to their ship, after having introduced Charlie to the Enterprise crew. The young man is the only survivor of a crash which happened 14 years ago on Thasus 14. Now the Enterprise is to take him along to Colony Alpha. When the Antares leaves, she suddenly gets destroyed.

Since Charlie was three years old, when the crash happened, the Thasians have cared for him. This shows in special powers Charlie uses. He can create perfume for a young Lady out of nothing, he makes the image of Yeoman Rand appear on playing cards, he turns a roast into living turkeys, he takes away Uhura's voice after he felt she makes fun of him when she sings a song with the name "Charlie" in it in the recreation room (where Spock plays the Vulcan harp) a. o. But Charlie was never taught to handle his abilities in a good way, so he does not know his limits and even kills Yeoman Rand, after she refuses to allow Charlie to touch her.

Kirk tried to teach him before, but now Charlie gains control over the ship. Kirk and Spock discuss things over a game of chess and Spock states, after he lost against the captain, "Your illogical approach to chess does have it's advantages on occasion, Captain." More people are killed by Charlie and when the ship is in distress, because Kirk tries to hinder Charlie to reach Alpha 5, a Thalasian appears on the screen. He informs them that they gave Charlie the powers to survive after the crash, but now they see that he is not capable to live amongst humans. All dead crewmen of the Enterprise are returned alive by the Thalasians. Charlie pleads to be allowed to stay – in vain.
