In Search Of... Season 2 # 18, Troy

Helen was so beautiful that Paris, a prince from Troy, abducted her to Troy. Her husband tried to get her back, losing a fleet of 1.000 ships. A ten year siege of the city did not bring any change either, but the idea to leave. Having left the Greeks also left behind a huge wooden horse which the Troyans brought into their city. The Greek soldiers hidden inside conquered Troy in the end. (The Ileon by Homer)

The place where Europe ends and Asia begins was called Ionia in the past, now it is called Turkey. 10 centuries BC the Greeks traveled Asia and established colonies in there. With the Greeks came their imagination of Gods and heroes. Homer was said to listen to stories when he visited the area.

As a 13year old boy Heinrich Schliemann taught himself to read the Ileon in Greek, the original writing. This inspired the later self-taught archeologist to search for Troy. He learned 14 languages, made himself a millionaire by mining in South Africa, all this in order to be able to search for Troy. When he found 9 cities on top of each other in a rural part of  Turkey, he discovered a treasure of 31 large objects of beaten gold and 9.000 small pieces. Troy is believed to be leveled by an earthquake and the survivors were killed by invaders.
