Season 2 # 6, MICHAEL
ROCKEFELLER
The Osmod
tribes are living a life that remained unchanged since the stone-age. In
1961 it drew the attention of a restless man named Michael Rockefeller. He
went to study and learn, living in a community where life is a continual
interaction of ghosts, spirits and magic. In their midst, in the remote
highlands of Dutch New Guinea, he disappeared and was never seen again.
First he joined an expedition the Dani as soundman and photographer.
Soon
Michael Rockefeller was fascinated by Osmod life, which means "tree
people", who still believe their spirit dwell in trees. For the Osmods
natural death does not exist, only evil spirits cause the account for the
passing of life. Their dead spirits will be revenged. The key to his
fascination was the woodcarving done by the Osmods. On Nov. 18th,
1961 Michael took off for another trip to buy carvings. He was warned about
currents. When the boat capsized the natives tried to rescue him. He tried
to reach the shore while his partner stayed at the capsized boat where the
partner was found a day later. 5000 native people searched for him – nothing
was found.
