In Search Of... Season 2 # 7, HURRICANES

 

From space a full grown hurricane appears as a giant pinwheel of swirling clouds. On Earth they are the most violent of all storms. Centuries ago peoples from the Caribbean worshiped a powerful sky-god they called "Hoorukan".

The warm sea creates bowls of air and then pillow up thousands of feet. The clouds gather together, the earth's rotation makes them spin: A hurricane is born. Hurricane hunters fly directly into the storm. In the eye the instruments take measurements. After several devastating experiences with hurricanes warning systems and hurricane research centers are in constant alert.

Examples of people killed by hurricane: 300,000 people near Calcutta, more than 6,000 people in Texas, nearly half a million people in East Pakistan...
