In Search Of... Season 5 # 10, Jimmy Hoffa
In 1967 Jimmy Hoffa began serving a 13year
prison sentence. It was the beginning of the end of the man who was called
America's most powerful Labor Leader. Hopper was pardoned 4 years
later.
On July 30th 1975 he left home and
disappeared without a trace.
Jimmy Hoffa commanded a work force larger than the United States Army. He
pleaded them not to take the law into their own hands.
In his teens Hoffa had joined a Union of
truckers and warehousemen. He helped engineer dozens of strikes to improve
working conditions.
Quickly he gained high positions in the Union. He achieved that truckers
nationwide would be bound by the same contract.
Considering the fact that the trucks moved food and clothing all over the
country: Is it possible that Jimmy Hoffa had too much power?
He took control of the huge central state pension fund and lent millions to
build gambling casinos.
From 1957 to 1963 attorney Robert Kennedy and his brother Senator John
Kennedy feuded bitterly with Hoffa.
After 7 years of prosecution Hoffa was convicted for jury tempering, for the
testimony of a teamster. Later he was found guilty of embezzlement. His
pardon implicated to stay away from Union activities. He also had become
unpredictable and dangerous.
There is evidence that Hoffa gave
information to the church committee about plots to kill Castro. James Kana
who was planned to speak before the church committee was murdered a month
before Jimmy Hoffa disappeared. Weeks before his disappearance he wrote a
book in which he mentioned the names of mobsters. He is also connect to
