In Search Of... Season 1 # 17, Easter Island Massacres

Huge stone giants guard the coast of an island between South America and Tahiti called Easter Island discovered by a Dutch explorer in 1792.  Hundreds of the statues have been destroyed and no person is left to tell why.

After discovery where hundreds of people swam out to bring gifts to the ship, slave raids, small pocks and wars raided the island diminishing the population to a small part of what it had been. Now it is part of Chile and inhabited by 1.000 people only. The bones of thousands of people have been found in underground caves. Were the statues destroyed because they had not protected the islanders?
