Season 2 # 1, THE LOST DUTCHMAN'S MINE
Arizona's
superstition mountains have been a ground for adventurers and treasure-seekers.
In 1860 a minor called the Dutchman staggered out of the mountains more dead than alive.
He had been tortured by Indians and seen his partner being murdered. What gave
him the strength to survive? It was treasure - great nuggets of gold. The Dutchman
said he found a mine full of it. He would never be strong enough to go back for
more however and the secret of the mine’s location went with him to the grave.
The Apache say the mountains are holy because there lives a thunder-god in a
gold-filled cave. Trespassing would activate a terrible curse.
Based on legend seven cities built of
gold had been part of the kingdom of Cibola. Hundreds have died in those mountains
after trying their luck.
