In the first play of the two (named "Spock versus Q") Spock had made Q
averting an asteroid heading towards earth. Q had known before how it would end,
but taken the chance to challenge Spock and enjoyed making a new friend. Coming
from dinner Spock and Q address the audience again.
Q is not, he simply tries to stay with Spock, who in return seems to be up to more important duties. Finally Spock convinces Q to leave. - Not before both indulge in sharing their view of the recent events.
They recall some incidents they had with the members of the crew during that evening. Q was getting autographs from them and loved and enjoyed any extreme action, while Spock is under the impression that Q dominated the evening. Now he waits for Q to leave.
But in the end Q agrees to leave and expresses his wish to shake hands. Spock gives in and suddenly there is enormous thunder, lights fade and they feel pain. Not realizing what has happened they are taken by amazement and Spock soon addresses Q calling him "Booby". And Q's hand still is painful.
Both wonder and cannot explain Spock's behavior. And Spock loves to express his deep impression of the infinity of space, of life and joy. It is Q who cares about the people who have vanished. In Q's second attempt to find out where all the people have gone Spock answers:
While Spock continues enjoying himself Q tries to find out where they are – to Spock's further amusement. Now Q knows it is on him to get them back. He snaps his fingers ... nothing happens. Again and again..... nothing. Spock suggests he should wiggle his nose. Worrying is not in his nature Q says and explains that he is curious. He wants to find out about the circumstances. Spock keeps on enjoying his jokes.
While Q wonders what he has just said, Spock enjoys anything he says
himself.
Q is sure: They are on an asteroid heading towards earth.
Spock becomes more and more flippant while Q gets more and more serious and caring all the time. Soon they discover the changes in the other and in themselves.
They explore the effects their behavior has on the other. And both discover that the changes inside them are quite similar to the other’s personality while they are on an asteroid which is bound to crash with earth.
Facing imminent danger both still explore themselves – and the other. Not only do both experience themselves with the eyes of the observer, but they live the other, too. This makes the dialogues not only humorous; it gives them a certain depth. These highly interesting and funny dialogues (which should be listened to) and an interesting end with a special message make it a play no one should miss.
