A French captain of a cargo ship (the Esperance - "hope") is risking his own life to save 400 Jewish people from the Nazis. Their ship is followed by a Nazi submarine for 12 days putting the passengers in permanent fear of their lives. Finding no place where they may stay safely one day the courageous people having experienced existential ups and downs are helplessly facing the demands of the Nazi submarine: To hand over someone special as a hostage - without being sure about their fate after having done so. Since no person by the name of the wanted person is on board, Baruch Posner offers to pose as the wanted man, though he just fell in love with a lady on the ship. The moment the submarine dives up to receive the hostage English planes blow up the submarine. |
