TOM COTTLE: Close Up

From grade-school to college Mr. Nimoy felt quite uncomfortable at school. Even in primary grade-school he didn't understand why the teacher rejected a drawing by a Chinese kid, which to him was a very "...extraordinary oriental looking impressionistic tree … But what was the point to satisfy this lady, when this guy has done a terrific job that I think is wonderful?"

"…almost all of the good moments had to do with being able to do something publically, to do something where I could stand up and make a statement of some kind."

A teacher from Boston College gave him a scholarship for a Two Month Summer Program. After finishing the program, he dropped out of college and went to California to study at the Pasadena Playhouse. "It was again an academic atmosphere that I stepped into, so I left."

About ten years later he realized he needed an acting coach and started learning and teaching with Jeff Corey. Another ten years later he got his first degree at college. "Probably because I felt that I had not done a good job of seeing the educational pattern through … Something about it bothered me."

The host compares Mr. Nimoy with a helicopter-pilot. He hovers over the track and sometimes finds himself on the train.

"...being able to say: I will not choose to do the traditional and typical... I grab hold of what is exciting, attractive and energizes me."
