"I was cast in a production of Hansel and Gretel when I was 8 years old in a neighborhood amateur production and was out on a stage for the first time. And I did a lot children's theatre work until my teen years when I began to be cast in more adult plays. I worked in amateur theatre for a number of years, 17, 18, 19 years old and then I left home to become an actor and went to the West coast to California to go to school and gradually, inch by inch, began to develop a career. In 1966 I was cast as Mr. Spock in Star Trek and I had a very active career ever since.

And then, a few years ago, after we made Star Trek II, the company, Paramount, asked me if I would be willing to act again in the first Star Trek movie and by this time I thought I really wanted to begin very seriously to work as a director. So I asked them to let me direct the picture which they did. It was my first feature film... And then I directed Three Men and a Baby and now The Good Mother.

A clip "The Good Mother" is shown.

Our society, our civilization, perpetually has a difficulty to accept sexuality and motherhood in the same person, in the same female... They are not comfortable to bring it together in the same individual...

Particularly in this film I was careful not to impose the camera. I was careful because it is a very delicate performance film and I wanted the actors secure in knowing that the camera is all right... I tried to create an atmosphere of security for the actors... This is a performance-film.
