May I call you Mr. Spock - I don't mind |

I'm not sure what the name is anyway
(laughing) |
Not long after Star Trek The Original Series was
cancelled, people started to attend special conventions.
Mr. Nimoy is still amazed by them. "They still keep coming. They hear the same
stories over and over again."
"I find it hard to take it all in. We have become
part of the culture."
Directing two of the Star Trek epics was
"Different, yes.
Difficult? No not really. I felt very much at home with the gang you know;
my people and my friends and a format that I understood; the characters that I understood.
So I directed two of them and had a good time doing it."

We managed to survive for 3 seasons
...
(On ST beginnings) |

... it has become a cult ... |

I am still amazed that fans come in thousands to hear the same stories over and over again |
Directing actresses and actors doesn't create
any ego problems.
"I come from an acting background, and I think one of my forte is to being able to make
an actor or actress feeling comfortable and secure."
He considers himself to be a very gentle director.
To enable this kind of relationship with his main
actors and actresses, a thorough preparation is essential.
"We sit down and talk about who the people are, what their relationship is all about,
what the story is all about, how they participate in this story, what their characters
contributes to this story and see if we're all of one mind before we start filming."

I can understand if an actor has trouble to find work because of
his being stuck with a certain character ... |

We have just finished shooting STV in December 28,
it will come out next summer |
The three main characters in Three Men and a Baby are
"three kinds of Peter Pans who are totally irresponsible. It's only about themselves.
And the infant comes along and does what women have not been unable to do which is
get them to pay serious attention and be responsible."
Before filming the three actors spent time together to "get some sense of ensemble"
as these characters are friends and share an apartment.
To get great performances out of Diane Keaton
and Liam Neeson in The Good Mother all Mr. Nimoy had to do was guide them through their
scenes. He compares it with "putting a great race horse in the starting gate and it's
all you can do to hold them in tell before the gate opens and the horse wants to go out
there and do the job."
He is very proud of the film. "This is a great drama. It's a love story of our times, a
very contemporary kind of love story."
"It's very much a story about our difficulty in
accepting sexuality in a mother, which is one of the things that I think is perpetual in
our society."

On Three Men and a Baby:
Were you able to keep control all the time? - most of the time |

... accepting sexuality in a mother is perpetual in our society |

Before we start we sit down and discuss the characters |
