1995 - I Am Spock

Leonard Nimoy's biography

Publisher: Blue Mountain Arts and Century
342 pages, 18 chapters

This interesting book contains a lot of facts and information, humor, stories of personal experiences and feelings Leonard Nimoy shares. It is intriguing to read, surprises with in-depth humor and chronologically leads the reader behind the scenes of Star Trek, mainly from Leonard Nimoy's but also from Mr. Spock's point of view.  Leonard Nimoy takes the reader along sharing about his life, mainly his experiences concerning  Star Trek

The b&w photos include one from his trip to Russia, some from stage work (Caligula, The Man in the Glass Booth, Camelot, a. o.) as well as private ones and from film works as  Never Forget a. o.
Interesting conversations are quoted or mail is shared as it was written. Very intriguing as well are the dialogues between Leonard and Spock which let the reader take part in the relationship of ... the two ... ? Or is it one? If it is one, a question arises: Is the usage of the term "relationship" possible? I Am Spock reveals much more concerning this re-occurring question and takes the reader along the inner journey.

Thank you, Leonard, for sharing your thoughts!

– A comparison between the US and the UK print

In Netherlands and other European countries the original American version of both book and tapes can be bought while all American books have to be reprinted in the UK. When comparing the two sets, the difference in price can be explained:

Both covers have the same picture. A red filter was used in the US, as the colouring of that picture is slightly different. The UK-cover is entirely glossy, while on the US-cover it is the title of the book only which is glossy. The binding of the books are different. The UK-book is glued; the US-book is stitched.

The colour inside the UK-book is white, while the colour in the US-version is red. Experts say that in the US they used paper of a better quality. Therefore it is slightly thicker. All pages begin and end with the same words.

Both books do not contain the same pictures. On page 292 in the UK-book you find a different picture from the one in the US-book.

An obvious difference is the quality of the pictures. All pictures in the UK-book appear to be too dark. They are either duplicates or they are underexposed. The pictures in the US-book are much more detailed as they contain more shades of grey.

A good example is the picture on page 300. In the UK-book it is almost impossible to see Spock’s cloak, as it appears to be as black as the background. The US-picture shows us all folds of the cloak and the way the cloak is worn. The same applies for Kirk’s coat: The US-picture shows vertical grey lines, which cannot be seen on the UK-picture.

The tapes: There is a hardly any difference in the quality of the sound.

One difference is the absence of a certain sound-effect on the UK-tape, which can be heard on the US-tape. On the UK-tape one can hear Leonard Nimoy reading those wonderful conversations with Spock, hardly any difference between Leonard Nimoy’s voice and Mr. Spock’s voice can be heard. The same conversation is heard on the US-tape as Leonard Nimoy’s voice on one speaker and Mr. Spock’s voice on the other. This stereo-effect is very effective to  really hear two different voices. During these conversations very soft background-music which creates an atmosphere of the conversation taking place in space can be heard.
