William Shatner said he had wanted to produce 'Mind Meld' to get some of his [Leonard Nimoy's] thoughts down on tape before he no longer could pass on his wisdom. "Seriously though, I thought it was a chance to see two friends sit down and communicate in front of a camera the way we have on the phone and across the table so many times over the years," William Shatner says.

Nimoy, in a separate conversation, says that 'Mind Meld' came together in a heartbeat. "I got a call from Bill. He’d come up with this idea with some associates of his and it sounded like a good idea to me. So within days we were sitting down and doing it. I saw this as an opportunity to talk in depth about some of the things that have be whispered about, wondered about or which were totally unknown, that might be interesting and useful to people who would want to see and hear this project."

'Mind Meld' is about their friendship, their divergent careers, Nerine's death, Gene Rodenberry, matters of morality and others. Asked why he had not talked about his alcoholism before, Leonad answered: "I've never been asked to talk about it before. Bill knew about it and asked if it was okay if we talked about it, and I said yes. It was an opportunity to put out some information that might be helpful to some people... Bill and I talked a lot about alcoholism, personally and on the tape. We had a lot of discussions on the subject. I had discussions with Nerine about it. And we do talk about that on the tape."
