In association with the audio division of Paramount subsidiary Simon and Schuster publishing John de Lancie started the company ‚Alien Voices'. Nimoy and de Lancie have started something ambitious: "These are not talking books, but audio theatre with full soundscape, original score and cast. We've done four titles so far." Three have been recorded for audio release: GH Wells 'The Time Machine', Jules Vernes' 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' and Arthur Canon Doyle's 'The Lost World'. Beside Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie the cast featured Armin Shimmerman, Ethan Phillips, Roxanne Dawson, Kate Mulgrew, Dwight Schultz and Nana Visitor. "I think the talent is extraordinary. We are getting great reviews and we've been referred to as the première acting company in Science Fiction today. We are called 'Alien Voices' by the way, because we've all played aliens and we're all connected with Star Trek." One of the things Leonard Nimoy likes the most about doing these audio adaptations is the lack of fuss compared to that surrounding a weekly TV series or a major motion picture. "Last November we did a production on-stage of 'First Men in the Moon'." In 'Brave New World' Leonard Nimoy plays Mustapha Mond, the man overseeing a whole continent as 'Controller I'. "I like to describe him as a politician that when he sees a parade coming down the street, he knows how to get out in front of the marchers and become their leader. He can shift gears depending on what the political mode is of the moment is. He's a delicious character with a twinkle in his eye... It is a good script... It's a wonderful story. There is the whole story of scientific breeding, no parental responsibility. It addresses the attitude of, 'Don't take responsibility for children; the society will take care of that, don't worry about it.' We live in a world where people are after immediate gratification... It is this philosophy that is being expressed in 'Brave New World'. Keep people happy, keep production up and keep consuming. Don't deny yourself anything... It is not only a wonderful story but very entertaining as well." "I think that good Science Fiction writers often go to an extreme to show a potential example of what might happen. I have great faith in Mankind, I have to, you know, I'm part of this civilization." |
