1985 -  Mr. Spock Comes Down To Earth For Hollywood Star Ceremonies

By Wendy Rathbone
January, 1985

In the early years of Hollywood, several miles of sidewalk were set aside for the names of the celebrities that put the town on the map. The tradition of assigning stars to blocks of concrete continues today...

Out of the transcript by W. Rathbone:

President and chief executive officer of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Bill Welsh:
"Since this is the first of our Walk of Fame ceremonies for 1985, I think it's very proper to wish you all a very happy new year... That you're here today indicates your affection and your feelings for Leonard Nimoy...
Leonard Nimoy is the man we honor today, and for many reasons. Not only for his great talents, which he demonstrates time and time again, but for his commitment to his country and his community..."

Johnny Grant, Honorary Mayor of Hollywood and Chairman of the Walk of Fame Committee:
"... more people showed up than our organizers had anticipated... The Marine Corps came down with the color guard... ... we dedicate star number
1,796...

(films, movies, records, stage plays, ...) Leonard takes time out from his very busy schedule to support many charities including The March of Dimes, The Variety Club, United Cerebral Palsy and Boston Children's Hospital. Locally his philanthropic efforts are centered at the Venic Family Clinic and he and his wife Sandi have received humanitarian awards from various religious organizations for their exemplary commitments. for 5 consecutive years Leonard nad Sandi hosted the annual telethon to raise funds for retarded children He also founded the Alan Nimoy foundation in Boston for cystic fybrosis.

Telegrams expressing personal congratulations are read and special guests welcomed.

Representing the mayor, Tom Bradley, Wendy Groul says: “On behalf of Mayor Bradley I'd like to acknowledge Leonard Nimoy's many talents as an actor, director, writer, photographer and recording artist. He's being honored today with a star on Hollywood Blvd. Mayor Bradley has now declared on behalf of the citizens, proclaims January 16, 1985 as Leonard Nimoy Day in Los Angeles. For his extraordinary talents and versatility. A man who is devoted to the art of living and who continues to grow with each challenge and further extend best wishes for his continued success.

The plaque was said not to be signed often by all 16 members of the council. Leonard's is and it is hold up.

Leonard Nimoy:
"Thank you very much. Thank you. There are a lot of people to thank Esther Lemay. And so many people who really got behind this thing and made it happen today... I've been very fortunate to work with so many talented people and to develop such good friends among my co-workers. I have the love and support of a wonderful family all these years and I must tell you that there's no way in the world that I ever could have hoped or possibly dreamed that a day like this would come in my life to see this event take place. I'm very grateful for it. As of today, I find myself in a rather illogical condition. I'm probably the only man on this street who can say that his head is in space and his star is on the ground. I want to thank you all very, very much. Live long and prosper."

For cameras, TV... the cover is pulled away again.

Leonard Nimoy's star is located on 6651 Hollywood Blvd. Northeast corner of Cherokee and Hollywood Blvd. intersection.
